Bay St. Louis

Picture
The authentic character, historic buildings, and friendly folks in Bay St. Louis are just a few of the reasons why Coastal Living Magazine named Bay St. Louis one of the top ten small beach towns in the country in 2010.

To sample the flavor of our town, check out the Shoofly Magazine, that focuses on living and happenings in Bay St. Louis.  It features over two-dozen articles each month, including columns on local outdoor recreation, art, homes, boating, food, antiques and history.  The Shoofly also has the most comprehensive community calendar on the coast!

Explore Old Town galleries, shops, restaurants, lodging and businesses below - and don't forget about the ever-popular Second Saturday Artwalk each month and the annual ArtsAlive! celebration.

~ Closest grocery store - Froogel's on Hwy 90.

~Old Town dining (2 -9 blocks from house)
  • Mockingbird Cafe - charming coffee shop - Old Town's "living room"
  • Lulu's on Main - sandwiches, soups and salads by popular chef, BEST roast beef po-poor boys

~ Beach
  • The Mississippi Gulf Coast beaches are known for the wide sand beaches, historic homes and ancient live oak trees that line the shore.
  • In Hancock County, we're luckier than the rest of the coast:  there's only a two-lane road (25mph) separating the towns/neighborhoods from the beach!
  • On this part of the gulf, the water has more of a lake-like appearance. That's because it's actually a sound with offshore islands - many of which aren't visible from shore.
  • This fact has saved us from the thick crowds of Florida, so unless it's a holiday, you can find a spot where you'll have a nice wide swath of beach to yourself.  While the water is too shallow to lend itself for real swimming (locals joke that they could wade to Mexico), it's perfect for peaceful lounging.
  • Leashed dogs are allowed on Hancock County beaches, but please pick up after your pooch!
  • MS Department of Environmental Quality tests the water off our beaches on a regular basis for bacteria counts.  Beach closings are rare in Hancock County, but before swimming, we recommend that you click here for the current status of the monitoring station closest to Webb School.  Swimmers are reminded that the Beach Task Force has a standing recommendation that swimming not occur during or within 24 hours of a significant rainfall event.

~ Nearby Recreation
  • Bridges Golf Course - This Arnold Palmer course is just a ten minute drive (3 miles) from the rental
  • Golf Course map - This map shows 8 other courses along the MS. coast. You can even book games on-line!
  • Popular Fishing Charters
  • Boat Cruises - ranging from fishing trips to Eco-tours

~ Coast attractions worth seeing (all less than an hour's drive away)
  • Ship Island Excursions - Family-owned ship goes to uninhabited barrier island with historic fort and natural beach
  • Walter Anderson Museum
  • George Ohr Museum - the buildings themselves comprise an exhibit!
  • Honey Island Swamp Tours
  • INFINITY Science Center/Stennis Space Center
